Debbie Riegel-Yates, President
I am a Dental Hygienist; I have worked for Skagit Valley Family Dental for 27 years. I love the outdoors and I am an Outdoor Specialist, teaching outdoor skills to Girl Scout leaders so they can take their girls camping. I love to garden, and I have won several first-place ribbons and Best of Class for several items. I am an actress and you can find me at the Front of House as the manager for Shakespeare Northwest in the summer. My passion is to serve those in need. We have had people stay with us until they could get into house or a place of their own.

Don Moe, Vice-President
When entering and exiting our church sanctuary on Sunday (Salem Lutheran), we pass under the words: "Serving God by Serving Others".  These words spoke strongly to me.
Since retiring from farming, I found myself with a lot of extra time and naturally became a driver, then church coordinator, and now board member for Family Promise.
My "handle" on the board may be VP but I serve as a Compliance Officer and try to keep informed of and share the many Family Promise requirements.  Currently, our church co-coordinator Hollie Benson and I are working on supplying a notebook for each coordinator containing all necessary forms along with the Family Promise coordinator handbook.
I am amazed at the dedicated people I have gotten to know in Family Promise. Our staff brings not only talent but a heart-felt commitment of helping people.  It has been a learning experience and eye-opening to witness the growth of the many families who enter and leave the Family Promise program.

In my work as a pastor, I became acutely aware of homelessness and especially how children are impacted by their being homeless. When I was introduced to Family Promise more than a decade ago, I decided to see what I could do in Skagit County to start such a program here. I’m committed to doing what I can to provide resources that keep children's’ lives on a stable course and I see our program doing just that - and well. A few years ago I retired from my role as pastor and continued my involvement in our program. I have very much enjoyed the people I’ve become colleagues with, both in sustaining the program and getting to know our guests in the program. They have all been an inspiration to me and our community.

In addition to this work, I am also a certified mediator for Courts in our two adjacent counties, as well as researching churches constructed by my immigrant grandfather in the early 1900’s. All these keep me very busy in my retired life. I’m happy!

By helping homeless families get back on their feet, we make Skagit county a better place to live. I want children, including homeless and foster, to have fulfilling and productive lives. I was formerly corporate controller of The Media Services Group, LTD, a software company. I have 5 children and 14 grandchildren.  I have been married 46 years to Kathey. Currently, I work with:
  • Office Moms and Dads for DSHS
  • Counselor at Royal Family Kids club and camp (for foster kids)
  • Treasurer Skagit Habitat for Humanity
  • Retired
  • HOA board
  • Various church activities at His Place

Peggy Bridgman, Church Coordinator

I was born and raised in Seattle, and I attended WSU, where I got a teaching degree. My husband and I built our home in Bow, and raised our daughter and twin sons there. I have taught every age student from pre-school to adult, most recently as a Spanish teacher. I have been involved in Family Promise of Skagit Valley since the beginning, when we were trying to get our affiliate off the ground. I worked (and continue to work) on recruiting churches and other groups to become involved with the program. I am presently the Recruiting and Church Relations Chair on the Board, and I am the Volunteer Coordinator for my church, Allen United Methodist. Also, this is my second year as chair of our Homeless for a Night fundraiser. When I learned that there are over 1,000 homeless children in the valley, I knew that I had to get involved, and what better groups are there than local churches to work on the issue? One of my favorite parts of the program is the way different groups are paired up to help one another. No matter where we worship, or if we are not even connected with a church, we all have a heart for helping families obtain a stable living situation.

My why is that I believe that caring adults and programs can help break the cycle of poverty and homelessness and provide hope! We have such a caring Skagit Valley community who wants to help! If we all work together we can help others get their feet on the ground and get a fresh start. Family Promise offers so many resources, trainings and other skills to help homeless families become self-sufficient and provide for their families. I work for Burlington-Edison School District as the homeless liaison to help kids stay in school and get a diploma! I have been in education for 34 years.
My husband of 35 years has also been a rock in education himself, and service in Rotary with me to help combat homelessness. My daughter is an educator also, in Detroit with the same passion to educate the disadvantaged. My son, daughter-in-law, and my new granddaughter are all great supporters of the work I do for children of poverty and homelessness! Our family is 4th generation in Skagit Valley and so proud to serve our community.

Susan Vendeland, Educational Nutritionist
Since adolescence I have had the desire to promote optimal health and well-being for all people. This aspiration led me to pursue education in nutrition and public health. I have also looked for ways to live out my Catholic faith by reaching out to those who are facing poverty and homelessness; to walk
alongside them as they seek to secure stable living conditions and chart brighter futures. Family Promise offers an ideal opportunity to work in community with families to foster hope and craft real solutions to
sometimes overwhelming challenges at a critical time in their lives.
My husband and I are grateful for three grown children, their spouses, and 3 young grandchildren.  Activities I love in the kitchen include cooking nutritious meals and baking wholegrain breads; outdoors I enjoy being physically active hiking, canoeing, and cycling. I delight in the beauty and bounty of the natural world and strive to grow in my understanding of how human beings might live full and flourishing lives.

Christy Stewart, Facebook & Web
My name is Christy Stewart and I want to help in our community and help children who are experiencing homelessness. When a recruiter came to our church to tell us about Family Promise and the statistics of homeless children in our county, I knew I needed to do something to help.  I started out volunteering as the coordinator for our church, then volunteered at the day center, and then was asked to be on the board. I'm enjoying being a greater part of the Family Promise community! I am a stay at home mom, I homeschooled my 4 girls, 3 of whom have graduated highschool already!  I enjoy gardening, reading, and serving in our local church where my husband is the pastor.
